Hyperthyroidism

White catQ.     My cat is being tested for hyperthyroidism.  What will happen if she has it?

A.     An overactive thyroid gland is a relatively common problem in older cats. They usually lose weight despite having a tremendous appetite, as their 'metabolic clock' is running too fast. A blood test can confirm the diagnosis and treatment is usually very successful.

Treatment can involve tablets, which need to be given every day for the rest of your cat’s life.

Alternatively surgery can be considered to remove the affected gland or glands, which are located at the front of the neck.
