Allergy to fleas
Q. I think my dog is allergic to fleas. Is there any treatment available to cure him of the allergy and get rid of his fleas?
A. There is no cure for his allergy apart from using a reliable flea treatment, rigorously following the recommended dose and interval between treatments.
Any other dogs or cats in the house must also be treated, and an environmental spray may be necessary to eliminate them from your house.
We now have very effective products to kill fleas, which are safe and easy to use - usually just a few drops of liquid applied to the skin on the back of the neck monthly. These are prescription medicines so you may be asked to bring your pet to the surgery for a check up.
If he is really bad at the moment a short course of steroids can help to stop the itching.
