Top pet care tips for the summer!

Temperatures are rising and the sun is shining, which we all love but we need to make sure that we are looking after our pets as the sun and heat can create their own challenges forĀ our dogs, cats, rabbits and other small furry creatures.

Grooming

Regularly brush your cat’s fur to get out any uncomfortable matts and for dogs with thick coats, get them a nice haircut and regularly groom them throughout the warm weather.

Hydration

Make sure that you provide plenty of fresh clean water for your pets!

Never leave your dog in the car on a hot day

Even if you have left a window open within a few minutes, the temperature in a car can rise to a dangerous level and your dog may experience heatstroke, which can be fatal.

Outside time

When temperatures are high, walk your dog at cooler times such as morning and evening and avoid hot pavements as they can burn their paws. For all pets, make sure you provide plenty of shady spots for resting to avoid sunburn.

Flystrike

One of the biggest summer concerns for rabbits is Flystrike. Ensure you keep your rabbit’s bottom dry and clean. In the warm weather, flies are attracted to rabbits that have wet fur that has been soiled by urine or faeces and will lay their eggs in these warm areas. Flies quickly hatch into flesh eating maggots which can place the rabbit into a terminal state of shock.
